The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

This past week, as the title of this post suggests,  had its ups and downs.

I will let you decide which you think of the three possibilities it might be- The Good, The Bad, The Ugly!

Our friends, Steve and Patti, arrived from Missouri safe and sound on Tuesday
YAHOO!!

It has been great seeing them and spending some fun times with them. More to come, I am sure.

As they were arriving, I was out shopping with the "girls" at Miromar Outlet Centre. A  great and successful day!
YEAH!

Bernie has continued his treasure hunting for fish. Although he has caught several catfish,

lady fish and stingray, none have made it, fortunately for them, to our dinner table.

However, the day was not a total wash out, as the dolphins did return to visit.

On the 25th of February, we are almost guaranteed a fish dinner, as Bernie is going out deep sea fishing with a group of guys.

The charter will take them out for a 10 hour trip to take the boys  out 48.28032 km  (30 miles).

Sure hope the water is calm, or else a lot of leaning over the boat  might be happening.

Thursday, we again ventured out to the Englewood Farmers' Market. Great tomatoes and Kettle Corn.

Entertainment is never far away.

Although, there was a video of Bernie entertaining the spectators with his dance, the 15 second video would have taken about 160 minutes to upload. Needless to say-no video!
Reminder to self, DO NOT TAKE VIDEOS!!!

Friday we went out to the beach for our first shark hunting expedition.
Weather was cool and windy, but it did warm up to allow people to display their beach attire.

Despite the hunt, results were negative and no teeth were found.
However, always great spending time at the beach.

Friday night we had Octoberfest at the resort.

I know, just a few months late, but a great fun time was had by all.
German food was provided, as well as German beer and German music.
Sorry, only a couple of picts as I had forgotten to charge my camera. Bernie did take a video of me doing a greek dance (multicultural event) but again too long to upload.

Ralf in his Lederhosen.

The Entertainer:

It appears there was no crowd there, however the clubhouse was filled to capacity with a sold out event providing a lot of dancing and good fun.

You may have thought only the good has occurred so far well....

Friday night, at about 11, the rain started to fall and then the winds came.
Of course, Guinness was beside himself as the storm increased in intensity. Bernie tried to comfort him, as I tried to sleep but to no avail.
Neither Guinness would relax, nor could I sleep.
As the night progressed the winds, rain and thunder increased. Guinness, finally found some refuge in the shower stall, shaking so bad I feared he might have a heart attack. So sad not knowing how to give him comfort.

At approximately 3 a.m., we heard an alarm coming from my phone. As I checked, I saw that a tornado warning had been issued!!!!!

The alert was to let us know that a tornado was in the area.
We turned on the tv (yes we still had power) and computers and tracked the storm front.

Very unsettling, receiving a tornado alert and being in a motorhome.

The storm continued and finally subsided at about 6 in the morning.

Lucky for us, no tornado touch down in the resort, however, the following day, we discovered that a tornado had touched down in the Myakka State Park a few miles north west of our location, completely destroying a trailer with remnants being found in various parts of the park including a tree.

We now have  our emergency plan in effect.
Whew! Close call.

Saturday we spent catching up on sleep and laying low.

We continue with the good:
Sunday a group of us minus Bernie, (explanation of his absence to come), returned to Palm Island for lunch.
On our way in the water taxi, we spotted a flock of Great American White Pelicans resting on a sandbar in the river. They are actually "snowbirds" who travel south for the winter from far away as Canada.
They have wingspan of that can range from 2.7 metres (9 feet) to 3.3 metres (11 feet)

The "girls" enjoying their beverages!

My Hurricane.MMMMM-mmmmmm Good!

Patti had us try this appetizer.
It was DELICIOUS!
Grilled tomatoes covered with cheese, bacon and drizzled with worcestershire sauce (I think)
Jeremy: you should suggest this recipe to Joel for M&M

After lunch, we spent an hour or so on the beach.

Great day, with great food and great friends.

The Bad the the Ugly:

Finally about Bernie.

In the 43 years I have known Bernie, I can count on one hand the number of times he has had a bad cold. Well, this is one of those times.
He has been sick for the past 3 days-not venturing out of the motorhome and staying vertical.
Yesterday an improvement was noticed.

Hopefully today will be an even better day and soon Bernie will be back to his tricks and teasing.
"Bernie's friends" have missed in the resort.

Since, today does not look like beach weather AGAIN, friends and I are off to visit the Peace River Wildlife Centre-a sanctuary for birds and animals who can no longer live in their natural environment.

Report to follow in future.

The Week in Review -Part 2

We continue with part 2. I may need to do a part 3. We shall see how things work out with cyberland.

On Thursday, we went to the Englwood Farmer's Market. Not just produce is sold but various other items such as clothing, make up, dog leashes, etc. you name it and most times can be found there.

We met several people there from the resort including Gwen and Rolly from northern Saskatchewan.
This is their first year in their motorhome and in their search for a winter retreat, just happened to find Myakka.

While there, we bought some delicious strawberries and tomatoes that had been picked the day before. They were delicious!! mmmm-mmmmm good!
The home made kettle corn was also scrumptious.

So, despite working out at the resort with various activities, food and drink are a plenty so needless to say..... continued work outs and keeping active are a must!

Always a fun time just people watching.

Friday, weather finally cooperated, which enabled a group of us to go participate in our eco kayak/paddle boarding venture. Despite the not so happy look on my face, I love being out on the water exploring.

As we tunnelled through the mangroves, our guide Stacy pointed out various marine life found beneath the shallow waters.

As we reached the lagoon, Stacy gathered us around to show some of the more unusual inhabitants.
The company, Hooked on Sup, is very environmentally conscious, so despite removing the creatures, to show us, everything is replaced in the exact location where it was retrieved. Wow! Now that is some memory.

Stacey explaining

about the horse conch.

Good thing I shaved my legs!!!

The Star Fish: There were hundreds of them,  all shapes and sizes, along the bottom of the  channel of the mangrove tunnel.

Next came the sponge to which was attached a living creature.

After our "nature lesson of the day, we paddled back through the tunnel and headed over to the state park for some lunch, all provided as part of the tour. The park is located at the tip of Palm Island-beautiful beaches and protected sand dunes and plants.

The "berry" at the end of this cactus is edible. Stacey has sampled the "fruit" which she said tasted sweet and reminded her of a pomegranate. It must be tricky picking that fruit.

As we paddled back to the dock, my wish was fulfilled. We saw several dolphins showing off-jumping and diving back into the water.
Very difficult to balance the kayak, watch the dolphins, get the camera ready and anticipate a photo op. The following result is not the greatest, but you will get the idea, if you zoom the pict to see this beautiful water mammal.

After seeing them, my day was complete and after a day on paddling for about 4 hours on the water, tired but ready for further adventures which took place when we returned to the resort with our Meet and Greet.

This activity, sponsored by Ralf and Amber, the owners of the resort, takes place weekly on the sunset patio. It is a chance to meet new people and greet our friends with a few drinks and nibblers.

Geez no drink in hand Elaine??

The Happy Gang!!

By the way I arose at 5 a.m. this morning, so I do hope you appreciate this post.
Internet works wonderful at this time of the day.
Yahoo!
I will close off by posting some picts of the wildlife at Myakka.
Enjoy!

And Yes Viv that is a real alligator-that is one of several residing in the lakes at Myakka.

Turtles saying hello.

As Bernie was out fishing from the pier, a hawk decided to pay him a visit.

A pod of dolphins also came by to visit.
Fortunately, Bernie had his camera to capture the moment.

Of course, I, the dolphin lover, was NOT there!

Today a group of girls, lol, and I are heading south to Naples to shop until we drop at the Miromar Outlet Centre

Today is all a great day because our good friends Patti and Steve +2 are also arriving from Missouri.

The ice cream shop awaits!!
