And Finally-Part 2-The End of the Journey

April 9th, sadly, we parted ways with Jan and Bob.

We were travelling north and they were travelling west.

We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know this great, fun-loving and adventurous couple over the past few months.

Such kind, friendly and generous people, who are  always willing to have a good time.

Bernie and I will miss them over the next few months, but we know we will meet again.

As we left Bella Terra in Foley Alabama, we travelled north along I65 with destination of Gunter Hill COE park.

A beautiful serene park near the shores of the Alabama River located in Selma, Alabama..

At Gunter Hill, we again met up with Lyn and Mike, who we had had the pleasure of meeting at Myakka.

A couple of fun days with fun people with cocktails starting at 2 in the afternoon!!!!!

After leaving Selma, we continued our way home with the next stop in Nashville TN.

What a nightmare that was, with major traffic tie ups due  to construction and  the NRA convention being held there with over 70,000 people in attendance.

With rv spots at a minimum, we were packed into the KOA campground like sardines.

Our motorhome was on the left of this photo with our neighbours in very close proximity.

Luckily, we had only booked here for one night, so early the following morning we packed up and continued north, with Louisville KY as our next stop.

As we left the park, traffic was relatively light until we were just north of Nashville and another traffic tie up.

It took us over an hour and a half to travel 10 miles.

FRUSTATION!!!!

Finally made it to our bourbon trail destination.

Jim Beam Distillery.
Finally, Bernie's wish was granted by visiting one of the world's famous bourbon distilleries.

We signed up for a very interesting guided tour and learned about the distillation process, Jim Beam history, the oak barrels, the bottling process etc.

The short bus ride took us to the distillery.

The Distillation Process

The Oak Barrels

The History

Distribution

Bottling Process

The Products

Not only do they produce various selections of bourbon, but also produce different types of whiskey and liquers.

After the tour, we had the opportunity to select 2 different types of bourbons in the tasting room.

Let us just say, I am not a fan of bourbon, nor do I think I will ever indulge after the taste test.!

Bernie on the other hand...

It was a great tour and highly recommend it, should you ever be in this area of Kentucky.

After a night of heavy rain, we packed up the next morning between the liquid sunshine??? and started heading east. It rained all morning and finally cleared as we approached Cincinnati.

Unlike like last year, when our last night was spent in freezing temperatures, this year we lucked out and camped our last night in Bluffton Ohio with beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures.

The following day April 15th, we finally reached Mississauga at 5:30 p.m. under beautiful blue skies and warm weather. YAHOO!

Despite the long day of driving it was great to finally be home.

Again, were it not for those who help look after our home in Mississauga, we would not be able to travel the way we do.

Thanks to Chris and Isabelle for looking after the house, Rebecca for collecting the mail and papers and Kevin and Ryan who braved the cold bitterly cold temperatures  to keep our sidewalks and walkways cleared of snow.

As I reflect on our three and a half month adventure, many great memories come to mind.

Our many meet and greet get togethers, our several outings to various restaurants and bars, kayak trips, beach days, shark teeth hunting, celebrations, segway and bike  riding.

Being with old friends, meeting new friends to help share the good times, and the fun times.

Although we experienced many adventures,  it is the people we meet along the ways, who help create our fondest and most treasured memories.

And so the journey ends.

With our impending move to a new city, I know we will encounter many new adventures.

And Finally Part 1

We are home safe and sound, so this will be my last posts.

After leaving Perdido Cove Resort in Pensacola,  we travelled west along the Florida Panhandle and  stayed in a the beautiful Bella Terra Resort in Foley Alabama.

During our time there, we had a chance to revisit Joe Patti, McGuire's Pub,  and celebrate Bernie's birthday two times.

McGuire's Pub is an experience not to be missed.

  • Awarded the Golden Spoon Award and the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for many years and recommended by Mobil Travel Guide and AAA, this 400 seat, 20,000 square foot landmark restaurant and pub is reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century New York Irish saloon and they serve the best steaks, seafood, burgers, and Irish fare this side of Boston. They are open daily for lunch and dinner.
McGuire’s Irish Pub first opened in 1977 as a small neighborhood pub in a shopping center. In 1982 McGuire’s moves to its current location; Pensacola’s original 1927 Old Firehouse. Inside the pub you’ll find a turn-of-the-century, New York Irish Saloon themed 615-seat restaurant.

It is celebrated for its atmosphere boasting more than one Million signed dollar bills hanging from the ceilings and walls of the Pub.

Now an estimated at 4 million dollars just hanging around!!

It has its own brewery

 an enormous wine cellar and

too many rooms to even count.

Our appetizer:

IRISH BOXTYS An old Irish favorite, “Boxty on the griddle, boxty in the pan; if you can’t make
boxty, you’ll never get a man”. Garlic Mashed Potatoes hand rolled in Herbed Bread Crumbs
and Flash Fried. Served with Salsa, Guacamole Dip and a Horse Radish Sour Cream Sauce . . . . . . . . . . . . .

These were delicious !!

Well worth the visit.

The first time we celebrated the birthday boy,

we went  out for din din with Jan and Bob.

We had attempted to dine at Lulu's, but the all the spring breakers and their family had the same idea.

Because we would have had a 2 hour wait, we decided to move on and had a great meal  at the Oyster House located in Gulf Shores Alabama.

Good dinner, good friends, good drinks with breathtaking water views and sunset.

Never ones to miss a photo op....

Thanks for the gifts and the very unique gift bag, Jan and Bob!

On Bernie's actual birthday, April 8th, the birthday boy requested to make a return visit to McGuire's Pub.

Our dinner consisted of:

IRISH POTATO SKINS Baked Irish Potato Skins loaded with Smoked Gouda Cheese
and Applewood Smoked Bacon

SHEPHERD’S PIE A True Irish Country Meal . A Casserole of Ground Steak
with fresh Vegetables topped with Smashed Irish Potatoes, Cheddar Cheese
and Baked to a Golden Brown . .

FISH & CHIPS Free Range Fresh Fish caught daily in the Irish Sea by McGuire’s

Cousin Nathan and battered in McGuire’s Red Ale . Served with Homemade Coleslaw .

I wonder who ate what?

The restaurant birthday song totally surprised Bernie!

I must apologize for the brevity of the following video, but just trying to multi task by singing and trying to capture the moment.

A birthday gotcha moment!

Bernie's delicious, amazing, scrumptious,  birthday delicacy, that I of course, did not have to bake, but had the pleasure of sharing!

Another fun night!

Movin' on ...
